You can mash vertical snippets into a portrait video without black bars on the sides. If you prefer horizontal snippets, you can keep making landscape videos as usual.
Tap Format (Orientation on Android) to switch between vertical and horizontal orientation.

When mashing in vertical mode, make sure your snippets are also in portrait orientation to avoid black bars at the top and bottom.
Similarly, when mashing in landscape, your snippets should also be in landscape orientation for the best visual experience.
